  61. Just got the latest OHR catalog and it shows their new 20 *and* 40 meter
  62. dual-band QRP transceiver.  I talked to them on the phone and they claim
  63. it has similar performance to their "Sprit" transceiver but is dual-band.

  65. Looks pretty nice.  Anyone out there build one yet?  Comments?

  81. I shoulda had Alinco fix this earlier under warranty as it was in the radio
  82. right out of the box when I bought it new.....ah well:

  84. The radio is supposed to cycle about once/second between normal 70ma current
  85. drain and 30ma low battery save drain. It is supposed to spend about 70% of the
  86. time at 30 ma. This of course when you invoke the battery save mode.

  88. Mine and another guy's cycle about once/15 seconds and spend only about 10msec
  89. at the 30ma drain - the other 14plus seconds at 70ma. And it produces a "clunk"
  90. in the speaker when it changes over. Does this reliably - not an intermittant
  91. condition.

  93. About the only way you would know this is going on is if you hear the "click"
  94. in the speaker - unless you went and used a scope on it as I did.

  116. I have a new Yaesu FT-890 with a built-in antenna tuner.  It's a fine
  117. rig and I really like being able to tune around, change bands, etc. and
  118. always be "ready" to transmit.
  119.  
  120. But I tune around a lot, and I hear the antenna tuner motors purring
  121. away, constantly tuning and re-tuning my antenna as I scan the various
  122. bands.
  123.  
  124. So my question is directed to automatic antenna tuner owners:  are such
  125. tuners known for wearing out and/or failing often?  If so, then maybe I'll
  126. disable it at all times except for when I'm about to transmit, but it's
  127. such a luxury to NOT have to do that, that I thought I'd ask if anyone
  128. else has had problems.

  154. I recently started using an FT-290 mark II portable transceiver for mobile use
  155. instead of a FT-480 (which is under surgery because of mysterious
  156. malfunctioning) and it seems to me the FT-290 is much less sensitive to
  157. weak signals. I heard from owners of the original FT-290, so to say the
  158. mark I, that there was a PCB available in those days, to improve sensitivity
  159. of the unit. Holes were pre-drilled in the unit, and the PCB fitted in there
  160. as if Yaesu forgot to put it in during production, and sold it as accessory.
  161. Does anyone know if the same goes for the FT-290-II? Is there an upgrade PCB
  162. or do I have to have my rig realligned?
  163. Any info and/or suggestions welcome.

  207. There is a small board inside the back of your unit called a TU-6. 
  208. The tones are set on this board by soldering or breaking the
  209. solder connections to the IC on the board (primative, but it
  210. works).  The pot on the board is for tone volume.  E-mail with the
  211. tone you want and I will give you the solder connections to make
  212. (there are 37 different tones and I am not into that much typing
  213. :-) ).

  300. I use a program called YAPP (Yet Another Packet Program).  I have been
  301. using it for years.  I find that whoever wrote these specialty programs
  302. seem to be land line based designers, whereas YAPP was written by a ham
  303. (WA7MBL).  It should be available as shareware...  I would just send a
  304. query on your local packet BBS.  What you you got to lose?

  332. A ham has responed to my query that RS DSP has no NR function at 
  333. all, to keep costs down.  I wonder why then is NR mentioned in the 
  334. documentation and on the box.  Marketing?  
  335. I think this unit is worth $80 and RS should not mislead anyone. I am 
  336. returning my unit because I wanted NR.

  365. Actual screen voltage is not too critical unless you are really trying to get
  366. every last watt out of the tubes.  Keep the plates below 2KV for best results.

  368. What is more important is that under some conditions, screen current can
  369. reverse, i.e. current flow is OUT of the screen.  This generally means that
  370. the screen supply must be able to still regulate with negative current 
  371. output.  A simple series regulator will not work unless enough "bleeder"
  372. current is added to guarantee that the bleeder current is greater that the
  373. maximum reverse screen current.  A shunt regulator circuit is generally
  374. desirable over a series regulator for this reason.
  375.  
  376. Eimac/Varian publishes some information on this in their data sheets.  The
  377. older VHF manuals also covered this situation.  Shunt zeners (or VR tubes)
  378. are not such a bad choice after all!

  389. I have been trying to find a matching power plug for the ICOM W21AT
  390. for less than $15 which is what HRO (and I'm sure others) sells ICOM's
  391. molded plug connected to a few feet of wire for.  One would think I could
  392. find such an item for $1-2.  I have tried Radio Shack and it appears that
  393. none of the half-dozen or so coaxial power plugs that they sell fit.
  394. I am in the New York City metro area so, if a local store carries this
  395. I would appreciate hearing of that, else I'll mail order.

  416. As you probably know, most amateur 2-meter handhelds (and mobiles for that
  417. matter) receive up to 174MHz.  They can usually be modified to transmit up
  418. there also, sometimes with somewhat degraded performance.  The catch here
  419. is they are not type accepted by the FCC so it is illegal to transmit with
  420. these radios outside the ham bands, even if you have a legitimate reason.
  421. Also, most of these handhelds are not preselected so they have poor performance
  422. outside the ham band regarding intermods.
  423.  
  424. The handheld that I use to cover both 2-meters and business band (I do some
  425. consulting for some shortline railroads out here so I need to be in the 160
  426. to 161MHz range) is an Icom H16.  This radio performs well over the entire
  427. range, is type accepted, and is keyboard programmable if you know the access
  428. code.  (Commercial radios are not designed to be user-programmable.)  It 
  429. holds 16 channels and has built-in scan and programmable DTMF.  I bought mine
  430. used but I think new they are around $600.  You can get them through any
  431. commercial radio dealer that sells Icom.
